Anna's passion for tennis

Sporting Life - January 2015

Anna hasn’t let age or distance get in the way of her passion for tennis

At just eight years old, Anna has a passion for tennis. And living on a farm outside Gunnedah in north eastern NSW means she has to go further than most for tennis practice, travelling around 250 kilometres a week just to attend tennis classes.

Responsibility and commitment

Growing up on a farm has instilled in her a sense of responsibility and commitment that carries over her to tennis. Three mornings a week she wakes up at a quarter past five to do her chores on the farm before tennis.

And Anna believes living on a farm actually assists her tennis.

“The farm helps a lot with tennis, keeping me relaxed and focused,” Anna says. “I travel to town to play tennis. I think it’s so fun. I would travel 100 miles for it. I like doing the tougher matches and the easier matches. It’s so fun because of my coach and all my friends.”

" I like doing practice,” Anna says.Practice makes perfect, as they say!”.

“She looks for opportunities and when those opportunities come along, she certainly grabs them with both hands.”

So far, her favourite tennis achievement has been finishing runner-up in the first tournament she travelled to in Tamworth.

A determined self-starter

Anna’s father Jamie says she is a determined self-starter.

“She’s not frightened to have a go at something she’s never done before,” Jamie says. “She looks for opportunities and when those opportunities come along, she certainly grabs them with both hands.”

“Whatever she decides to do she puts her heart into it. She’s someone who likes to do her best.”

Hotshot of the Month

And her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Anna was named Tennis Australia’s ANZ Hotshot of the Month in November 2014. As one of 12 chosen nationally, she won a Tennis Hot Shots equipment pack and a VIP trip to the 2015 Australian Open in Melbourne with behind-the-scenes access and the opportunity to have a game on Rod Laver Arena.

She says she can’t stop thinking about the honour and is looking forward to seeing players like Roger Federer and her tennis idol Serena Williams, as well as meeting other kids who love tennis as much as she does.
