Savings tips to help Kiwis stay warm

July 2015

Saving money isn’t about making sacrifices, it’s about staying on top of what you’re spending

For more than 10 years, ANZ, together with a range of community partners, has helped nearly 300,000 people worldwide improve their financial skills through the MoneyMinded program. It's been so successful, we've decided to share a few ideas with everyone.

Each Monday, we'll share a simple, fun tip. So whether you want to learn better budgeting tips, reduce your debt or start saving, check back each week to stay updated. You’ll be amazed what’s possible when you take it one Monday at a time.

Start a spending diary

A spending diary helps you keep track of what you spend your money on (bills, food, coffee, transport, rent).  Recording each expense allows you to monitor exactly how much you spend over a period of time and uncover all the little ways you can save, like using draft stoppers to reduce your energy bill.

Focus on recording all your spending for one week and it it's working, extend it to four weeks to get a really good idea of your total monthly outlay.

Things to do:

  • Buy a small notebook, start a simple spreadsheet, or download a spending tracker app for your phone.
  • Track your expenses for one week, noting the date, item, cost and reason for the purchase.  Keep your receipts, too.
  • Take into account things like insurance; if you pay it as an annual fee, this should be divided by 12 and then included as a monthly expense.
